Engineering Properties and Environmental Impact of Soil Mixing with Steel Slag Applied in Subgrade

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility large-scale application steel slag (SL) in subgrade. Subgrade materials with three kinds SL proportions were first prepared. Then, a compaction test, liquid-plastic limit combined-measurement and California bearing ratio (CBR) test applied determine best proportion between intact soil (S), i.e., SL/S. Subsequently, static dynamic tests volume stability carried out for mixed at optimum (SSL). In addition, composition analysis infiltration fluid permeability SSL performed. results showed that compared S, physical properties significantly improved, especially limit, as well water stability. determined 50% by mass. At proportion, had highest CBR value 60%, which both economic engineering performance, leading utilization rate SL. characteristics addition would greatly improve shear strength modulus soil, mainly expressed increase internal friction angle. could also meet requirements Chinese specification.
